Virtual Authors Series: Jess Bowers ’02 and Horse Show

Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 7:00 PM until 8:00 PMEastern Standard Time UTC -05:00

Join us in partnership with Friends of the Library for a Virtual Authors Series event with Jess Bowers ’02.

Jess Bowers ’02 lives in St. Louis, Missouri, where she works as an associate professor of English and humanities at Maryville University. A winner of Laurel Review's Midwest Short Fiction Prize and the Winter Anthology Prize, her debut collection, Horse Show, was recently named one of the “Most Exciting Debut Short Story Collections of 2024” by Electric Literature. From the tale of Lady Wonder, the mare who fooled a Duke University psychologist into thinking she could read minds, to television palomino Mr. Ed’s hypnotic hold over Wilbur Post and his long-suffering wife, the 13 stories in Horse Show explore how humans have used, abused, and spectacularized their equine companions throughout American history. Wrestling with themes of obsolescence, grief, and nostalgia, Bowers guides us through her museum of equine oddities with arresting imagery, unflinching intensity, and dark humor. Our moderator is Joey Fink ’15, former Recent Graduate Trustee, current AAGC Executive Committee member, and former captain of the Goucher Equestrian Team.

NOTE: Zoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants prior to the event.
