Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) Student Panel

Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at 7:00 PM until 8:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

Did you know April is Second Chance Month?

Second Chance Month is raising awareness about the barriers faced by individuals when they come home from prison and promoting opportunities for them to contribute to the communities in which they live, work, and raise their families. It is a time to advocate for criminal justice reform and reentry initiatives.

Goucher offers college in prison?

Yes! Since 2012, women and men in two Maryland prisons have been Goucher College undergraduates. Currently numbering 130, they enroll through the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP). All course offerings in the prisons are in person, identical to those offered in Towson, and taught by faculty from Goucher/other colleges (Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, etc.). Students from Goucher’s Towson campus volunteer as tutors in the prisons. 40% of GPEP students who have graduated from Goucher have done do with honors. Five former GPEP students are now in graduate programs!

Please join us for an evening of conversation with three former GPEP students who are currently completing their degrees on Goucher’s Towson campus: Jeremy Gordon, Shaka Wakefield, and Ronald Wolfe.

You will leave this panel discussion with a rich understanding of GPEP--and of Goucher’s commitment to educating those not traditionally invited into academia, including women at the time of our founding, first generation students, and those living in prison. Your perspective will be broadened and enriched by the conversation with Jeremy, Shaka, and Ronald. But be prepared, when they last spoke, they were so charming that an audience member literally gave them the Goucher sweater off his back!

We look forward to having you with us, as we strengthen the bonds between Goucher’s campus in Towson and those in the Jessup prisons. Read more about GPEP at www.goucher.edu/GPEP
